{"id":2106,"date":"2017-01-02T12:06:05","date_gmt":"2017-01-02T12:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/?p=2106"},"modified":"2017-01-02T12:06:05","modified_gmt":"2017-01-02T12:06:05","slug":"the-match-charting-project-2017-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/02\/the-match-charting-project-2017-update\/","title":{"rendered":"The Match Charting Project, 2017 Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2016 was a great year for the Match Charting Project (MCP), my crowdsourced effort to improve the state of tennis statistics. Many new contributors joined the project, the data played a part in more research than ever, and best of all, we added over 1,000 new matches to the database.<\/p>\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t know, the MCP is a volunteer effort from dozens of devoted tennis fans to collect shot-by-shot data for professional matches. The resulting data is vastly more detailed than anything else available to the public. You can find an extremely in-depth report on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/charting\/meta.html\">every match in the database<\/a>&#8211;for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/charting\/20161030-W-Singapore-F-Dominika_Cibulkova-Angelique_Kerber.html\">here&#8217;s the 2016 Singapore final<\/a>&#8211;as well as an equally detailed report on every player with more than one charted match. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/charting\/AndyMurray.html\">Here&#8217;s Andy Murray<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, we:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>added 1,145 new matches to the database, more than in any previous year;<\/li>\n<li>charted more WTA than ATP matches, bringing women&#8217;s tennis to near parity in the project;<\/li>\n<li>nearly completed the set of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/charting\/slamfinals.html\">charted Grand Slam finals<\/a> back to 1980;<\/li>\n<li>filled in the gaps to have at least one charted match of every member of the ATP top 200, and 198 of the WTA top 200;<\/li>\n<li>reached double digits in charted matches for every player in the ATP top 49 (sorry, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/cgi-bin\/player.cgi?p=FlorianMayer\">Florian Mayer<\/a>, we&#8217;re working on it!) and the WTA top 58;<\/li>\n<li>logged over 174,000 points and nearly 700,000 shots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I believe 2017 can be even better. To make that happen, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/23\/the-match-charting-project-quick-start-guide\/\">we could really use your help<\/a>. As with most projects of this nature, a small number of contributors do the bulk of the work, and the MCP is no different&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/charting\/meta.html#contributors\">Isaac and Edo<\/a> both charted more than 200 matches last year.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/08\/11-reasons-to-contribute-to-the-match-charting-project\/\">plenty of reasons to contribute<\/a>: It will make you a more knowledgeable tennis fan, it will help add to the sum of human knowledge, and it can even be fun. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/23\/the-match-charting-project-quick-start-guide\/\">Click here to find out how to get started<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m proud of the work we&#8217;ve done so far, and I hope that the first 2,700 matches are only the beginning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2016 was a great year for the Match Charting Project (MCP), my crowdsourced effort to improve the state of tennis statistics.
