{"id":229,"date":"2011-04-06T14:21:52","date_gmt":"2011-04-06T14:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heavytopspin.com\/?p=229"},"modified":"2011-04-06T14:21:52","modified_gmt":"2011-04-06T14:21:52","slug":"wednesday-topspin-looking-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/06\/wednesday-topspin-looking-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Wednesday Topspin: Looking Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Backtrack:<\/em> If you haven&#8217;t read it yet, you should check out the <a title=\"Net-rushing, or The Stats We Don\u2019t\u00a0Have\" href=\"http:\/\/tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/05\/net-rushing-or-the-stats-we-dont-have\/\">piece<\/a> I wrote yesterday afternoon about net-rushing, and the way we&#8217;ll someday be able to analyze the strategy. \u00a0There&#8217;s some great stuff in the comments, as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>Feeling small: <\/em>It was a rough day in Houston yesterday for <strong>Benjamin Becker<\/strong>. \u00a0The #5 seed lost his singles match to <strong>Ivo Karlovic<\/strong>, winning only <em>eight <\/em>return points. \u00a0Becker is the only seed to fall in the first round, and Ivo was the only qualifier to reach the round of 16.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t get any easier for Becker in the doubles. \u00a0Teaming with <strong>Igor Kunitsyn<\/strong>, he lost to <strong>John Isner<\/strong> and <strong>Sam Querrey<\/strong> in straight sets. \u00a0At least in that match he got a few break points.<\/p>\n<p><em>More from Houston: <\/em>Of the nine first-round singles matches yesterday, only one went to three sets. \u00a0That was the tilt between <strong>Carlos Berlocq<\/strong> and <strong>James Blake<\/strong>. \u00a0Berlocq won a first-set tiebreak before Blake came charging back, eventually winning 6-7 6-3 6-4. \u00a0The numbers from that match are positively bizarre. \u00a0Blake made only 47% of first serves, and faced\u00a0<em>twenty<\/em> break points. \u00a0Berlocq only converted two of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan Harrison<\/strong> had just as bad a day as Becker did. \u00a0He lost in straights to <strong>Horacio Zeballos<\/strong>, then dropped his doubles match against &#8230; Zeballos. \u00a0It will be interesting to see if Harrison is able to make any kind of statement on clay this year, as he won&#8217;t have the benefit of the wild cards he has received stateside.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s schedule consists of the bottom half of the draw&#8211;four singles matches including Isner&#8217;s and Querrey&#8217;s. \u00a0Querrey will face a rematch of his Delray Beach loss against <strong>Ryan Sweeting<\/strong>, while Isner confronts Zeballos. \u00a0Karlovic should coast into the quarterfinals thanks to a matchup with Kunitsyn.<\/p>\n<p><em>Getting interesting: <\/em>I mentioned yesterday that the field is Casablanca isn&#8217;t very compelling. \u00a0A trio of upsets already today have lowered the quality, but perhaps they have made the event more interesting.<\/p>\n<p>In three singles matches so far today, the 2nd, 4th, and 6th seeds have all lost. \u00a0#2 seed <strong>Marcos Baghdatis<\/strong> fell in three sets to 20-year-old Russian qualifier <strong>Andrey Kuznetsov<\/strong>, and #4 seed <strong>Andrey Golubev<\/strong> lost to <strong>Pere Riba<\/strong> after bagelling Riba in the first set.<\/p>\n<p>8th seed <strong>Victor Hanescu<\/strong> plays <strong>Michael Berrer<\/strong> in a little while, and given the way things have gone so far today, he should be very concerned.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll check back in with the challengers tomorrow&#8211;see you then!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Backtrack: If you haven&#8217;t read it yet, you should check out the piece I wrote yesterday afternoon about net-rushing, and the way we&#8217;ll someday be able to analyze the strategy. \u00a0There&#8217;s some great stuff in the comments, as well.
