{"id":278,"date":"2011-04-19T14:41:13","date_gmt":"2011-04-19T14:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heavytopspin.com\/?p=278"},"modified":"2011-04-19T14:41:13","modified_gmt":"2011-04-19T14:41:13","slug":"tuesday-topspin-a-new-big-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/19\/tuesday-topspin-a-new-big-man\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Topspin: A New Big Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Not so wild: <\/em>Last week marked a big accomplishment for Dutchman <strong>Thomas Schoorel<\/strong>&#8211;he won his first challenger-level title, and ascended to a career-high ranking of #126. \u00a0It&#8217;s now more than a big week, it&#8217;s a big nine days.<\/p>\n<p>Schoorel entered this week&#8217;s tournament in Napoli with points to defend&#8211;last year at this time, he won a futures event in Italy. \u00a0The task was challenging&#8211;after a week of beating guys with rankings in the 100s, he drew top-seeded wild card <strong>Jeremy Chardy<\/strong>. \u00a0Today, he proved himself up to the task, dismissing Chardy in straight sets. \u00a0It will only get easier from here&#8211;in the second round, he draws world #256 <strong>Pavol Cervenak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutchman is a lefty standing 6&#8217;8&#8243;, a combination that surely makes it tough for first-time opponents. \u00a0His 22nd birthday was a couple of weeks ago, and with his new ranking, he&#8217;s among the top 15 players at his age or younger.<\/p>\n<p><em>Also in Napoli: <\/em><strong>Thomas Muster<\/strong> is turning into an object lesson for former pros considering a comeback. \u00a0It&#8217;s a rare man who returns to the tour with any level of success, but Muster is setting new lows. \u00a0This week, he fell to <strong>Uladzimir Ignatik<\/strong> 6-3 7-5, moving his record on the year to 0-4. \u00a0I&#8217;m sure the former #1 is drawing the crowds &#8230; but that&#8217;s why there&#8217;s a champions tour.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nadal&#8217;s next victims: <\/em>In Barcelona, we&#8217;re still plowing through an uneventful first round. \u00a0Of the seven final scores so far today, the headline-grabber is <strong>Juan Carlos Ferrero&#8217;s<\/strong> successful return to the tour, as he dropped only six games in beating <strong>Xavier Malisse<\/strong>. \u00a0He&#8217;ll face <strong>Andy Murray<\/strong> in the second round, if the Brit plays&#8211;his elbow is still an issue, and <a href=\"http:\/\/tennis.com\/articles\/templates\/news.aspx?articleid=11539&amp;zoneid=25\">he may withdraw<\/a>. \u00a0If he does, it will create one of my favorite quirks of the tournament entry system&#8211;a lucky loser will get a bye into the second round.<\/p>\n<p>The best matches of the day are still to come. \u00a0The second round gets underway as <strong>Gael Monfils<\/strong> plays <strong>Robin Haase<\/strong>, in a match that has upset potential, if only due to Monfils&#8217;s rustiness and the usual crapshoot of whether good Gael or bad Gael takes the court. \u00a0Finishing up the first round, <strong>Milos Raonic<\/strong> plays <strong>Radek Stepanek<\/strong> and <strong>Alexandr Dolgopolov<\/strong> takes on <strong>Nikolay Davydenko<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I ran a full projection of the draw&#8211;if you haven&#8217;t seen it, <a title=\"Barcelona\u00a0Projections\" href=\"http:\/\/tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/18\/barcelona-projections\/\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all I&#8217;ve got for today&#8211;see you tomorrow!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not so wild: Last week marked a big accomplishment for Dutchman Thomas Schoorel&#8211;he won his first challenger-level title, and ascended to a career-high ranking of #126. \u00a0It&#8217;s now more than a big week, it&#8217;s a big nine days.
