{"id":495,"date":"2011-08-23T18:54:07","date_gmt":"2011-08-23T22:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heavytopspin.com\/?p=495"},"modified":"2011-08-23T18:54:07","modified_gmt":"2011-08-23T22:54:07","slug":"us-open-draw-datasets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/23\/us-open-draw-datasets\/","title":{"rendered":"US Open Draw Datasets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier today, I published <a href=\"http:\/\/tennisabstract.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/23\/is-the-us-open-draw-truly-random\/\">a thorough analysis<\/a> of the last ten years of US Open draws, showing that while first and second seeds have had extremely easy first-round matchups, there is no other credible statistical evidence that suggests any nonrandom manipulation of the draw.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to take a look at the draws yourself, I&#8217;ve made it easier. \u00a0The following files not only have the full draws going back to 2001, but they also include each player&#8217;s ATP or WTA ranking at the time of the tournament, their ordinal ranking among the players in the draw, the ordinal ranking of their first-round opponent, and the ordinal ranking of their best-possible second round opponent.<\/p>\n<p>Click to download the files:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffsackmann.com\/uso_atp_rankings.csv\">US Open Men&#8217;s draws, 2001-2010<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffsackmann.com\/uso_wta_rankings.csv\">US Open Women&#8217;s draws, 2001-2010<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick rundown of the columns you&#8217;ll find in each sheet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Year &#8212; each file contains the entire draws for the last ten years.<\/li>\n<li>Draw Pos[ition] &#8212; numbers 1 to 128, so you can always sort the sheet to show the players in draw order. \u00a0(For instance, the #1 seed is 1, that player&#8217;s opponent is 2, and so on.)<\/li>\n<li>Player<\/li>\n<li>Country<\/li>\n<li>Seed &#8212; the seeding assigned by the US Open<\/li>\n<li>Rank [ATP\/WTA] &#8212; the player&#8217;s official ranking the Monday that the tourney began.<\/li>\n<li>Ordinal &#8212; the player&#8217;s rank <em>among the 128 players in the field<\/em>. \u00a0Last year, Shelby Rogers&#8217;s WTA ranking was 344, which made her ordinal ranking 124 out of 128.<\/li>\n<li>1stRdOpp &#8212; the ordinal ranking of the player&#8217;s first-round opponent.<\/li>\n<li>Best2nd &#8212; the ordinal ranking of the player&#8217;s best possible second-round opponent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Let me know if you find anything interesting!<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier today, I published a thorough analysis of the last ten years of US Open draws, showing that while first and second seeds have had extremely easy first-round matchups, there is no other credible statistical evidence that suggests any nonrandom manipulation of the draw.
